This introduction to wood firing with Miki Shim will cover the basics of creating work, firing a wood burning kiln and learning the etiquette of being part of a wood fire community.
This workshop is recommended for members with Intermediate level experience (throwing or handbuilding) and students who have taken at least two 6-week classes at our studio.
Week One : December 1, 2, & 3: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
3-day work weekend in the studio
We will explore forms and surface textures that highlight the effects from firing in a wood burning soda kiln.
Week Two : December 8, 9, & 10: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
3-day work weekend at the kiln (Spring Valley Anagama)
We will meet at the kiln site to prep our bisqueware, glaze and load the kiln.
a 2 day firing will start on Saturday morning and continue into the night for 24 hours until we reach temperature and add soda/salt solution.
Week Three : December 16: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Kiln Opening and Clean-up (Spring Valley Anagama)
We will open the kiln and unload together to review the results of the firing.
Clean-up of the kiln and kiln site will follow as part of our wood fire community responsibilities.
Attendance is mandatory for all the date listed. Please plan accordingly.
Additional clay and kiln space available for purchase. All participants must use workshop clay, one bag included in the price.
